Family in Our Care
We are protective of our patients –
We know we are not supposed to,
But we cannot help it.
It’s hard not to see them
As more than patients.
We see them as loved ones,
As family.
We were raised to see
Our elders with respect.
They have raised us,
Made sacrifices,
Protected us.
And now,
We do the same for them.
We know we are not supposed to,
But their faces reflect our loved ones –
The ones who sacrificed for us,
Nurtured us,
Protected us.
We know we are not supposed to,
But we become protective of them,
Possessive of those in our care.
To us, they are not numbers –
They are family.
Their fears,
Their tears,
Become our own.
Their lives in our hands.
Their trust in our care.
Our patients.
We guard them like lions with cubs,
Become vicious to those who threaten them.
Protective like mama bears,
Yet always tender with those in our care.
We advocate fearlessly,
With the clear message:
You don’t mess with our patients.
Putting their needs above our own.
But when we can’t protect them,
When our hands are tied,
We carry the weight of that failure –
Filled with guilt and frustration.
We know we are not supposed to,
But it happens.
