Waking Up from the Lie

Introduction

This Was Not in the Job Description

I came to work to save lives.

Instead, I barely survived my shift.

I was assaulted while doing my job as a nurse.

Hit.
Injured.
And then ignored.

No warning.
No protection.
No justice.

Just silence.
Just paperwork.
Just me — left to pick up the pieces of a life that would never be the same.

They told me it was “part of the job.”

They silenced me, urged me to move on,
To not make waves.

But here’s the truth:
Silence doesn’t protect anyone.
It only protects the system that allows this to happen,
Over and over again.

So, I started writing.

What spilled out was everything I had buried —
Grief, rage, truth,
And the desperate hope of healing.

This is my testimony.
My resistance.
My refusal to disappear.

I hope that by speaking out,
Someone else will feel less alone,
And more empowered to do the same.

I wrote this for every healthcare worker
Who has ever felt unsafe, unseen, or sacrificed.

I wrote it to pull back the curtain
On a system that rewards silence
And punishes honesty.

I wrote it because we deserve better.

This is not just my story.
It’s a warning.
It’s a witness.
It’s a war cry.
