Loving a Country That Doesn’t Love Us Back
My family, too, loves this land –
A love built on hard work and sacrifice.
We gave all we could –
Our time, our strength, our hearts.
We gave our sweat and blood,
Contributed to the fabric of this land,
To its strength, its growth.
So much so that we offered ourselves to protect it,
To defend the very soul of this nation.
We wore with pride the colors of freedom,
Stood with deep respect beneath its flag,
With hearts full of hope, full of love.
But now, in the shadows of hate,
We feel that same pride slipping away.
The country we gave so much for
Is not returning that love.
The betrayal is shocking and painful,
The sting of injustice cuts too deep.
History is again repeating itself.
Ethnic cleansing is upon us once more.
Our country now feels like a battleground –
Once proud Americans, now fearful.
Our friendly neighbors now persecuted.
We watch our loved ones tremble,
Our communities terrorized.
Our hearts are breaking under the weight of it all –
Tears, fears, and heartbreak,
A deep wound that may never heal.
I long for the day
When my love for this country can return.
But still, we carry on –
Loving this land,
Even as it turns its back on us.
