What Happened to Nursing?
Compassionate healing once given freely –
Empathy, respect, and integrity,
Offered wholeheartedly yet rarely returned.
The innocence of nursing was shattered,
The delicate bond strained.
Suddenly, we stood guard –
Protecting ourselves from abuse,
Guarding against liability.
What happened to nursing?
The spirit of nursing dimmed,
Morale fractured,
The blows so many,
The bruises now impossible to hide.
Our compassion exploited,
Our complaints ignored,
Our fears swept away,
Our tears mopped up.
The foundation of nursing in distress –
Violated, broken, on its last leg.
Once the healer, now in need of healing,
In need of protection from the blows,
From the constant exploitation.
What happened to nursing?
Ignored and abused.
That’s what happened.
