The Tears of a Nurse

The Tears of a Nurse

The tears of a nurse fall –
When you are born,
When you are hurt,
When you die.

They hide –
When you hit us,
When you scream at us,
When you belittle us,
When you lie.

They cling for dear life,
Held back –
It’s inappropriate.
It’s unprofessional,
They would say.

The tears of a nurse
Are brushed away,
Wiped quickly,
And begin to dry.

But over time,
Pushed aside,
Buried deep,
Restrained –

The tears of a nurse
Refuse to fall.

And the nurse, at last –
Numb,
And broken,
Can no longer cry.
